Large, Pentney brooch
Open-work silver sheet metal disc brooch with an outer zone consisting of eight nielloed panels of animals with interlacing tongues and tails, arranged in opposing pairs. Within this, the central field has a cruciform arrangement punctuated by a central quincunx of bossed rivets with four outliers. The cross's open-work centre has stylised plant decoration; each of its expanded terminals has a pair of addorsed beasts with foliage and interlacing tails. The 'armpits' of the cross each contains a subtriangular nielloed ( acrylic to simulate the resin) field with, alternately, interlace or animal ornament, flanked by the open-work beasts with leafy tails. There is extensive pecked detail and beaded borders. The back is plain; the pin is fixed to the brooch by two stylised animal heads which clamp on to the front of the brooch and are riveted through.
Available only in silver.
