Largepectoral cross, based on the find from the Galloway hoard. The cross features extensive engraving in the Trewhiddle style. Very typical style from the 9thc.
In each of the arms of the cross are the symbols of the four evangelists who wrote the Gospels of the New Testament:
Saint Matthew (bottom – haloed figure)
Saint Mark (right – the winged Lion)
Saint Luke (left – winged ox)
Saint John (top – eagle)
The original has a missing centrepiece. I have added a possible centre, using the glass centrepiece from the Gravesend cross as a guide.
