Large 6thc buckle from Aker in Norway.
A classic ear;ly buckle featuring bird, boar and human figures in the decoration. The decor is in high relief with inlaid garnets (simulated by resin) and niello inlay in the cut lines (also in Resin) . The three rivets and eyes on the birds from the buckle loop all have real garnet cabachons set in the mounts.
The buckle is made from gilded brass and is around 10cm long by 6cm wide on the buckle loop and 4.6cm wide on the buckle plate. The buckle is also about 5mm thick.
The backplate is silver plated brass.
