Medieval poison detector pendant brooch, made from a fossilised shark tooth set in silver.
This was a common item in the medieval period, the tooth was thought to be a snake or dragon tongue that would detect poison in your drinks. THe teeth from Malta were supposed to be the best, this one is from Belgium. The chain of the tooth can be threaded on to the brooch pin to secure when worn. Tooth measures 37mm x 24mm with a 9cm silver chain. Each tooth will vary slightly in size, shape and colour.
