A pendant based on a 7thc mount found in Hampshire.
The pendant is in the form of a horned head. The circular face has rounded eyes set with garnets, above pronounced cheeks. The beard is triangular with the ends of the moustache extending beyond. The hair appears uncovered but then develops into two decorated crescent extensions (the horns), meeting centrally above the face with what might be an eagle, and/or serpent heads. The eyes in the heads have red resin.
These objects are thought to be connected to the cult of Woden and represent Woden himself. Woden is the principal Anglo-Saxon/Germanic god, corresponding to Norse Odin.
4cm x 2.4cm. Available in Silver, gilded bronze and bronze.
