Penannular brooch found in Galway (Ireland). This brooch dates from the 9th c and is similar in style to Pictish brooches (St Ninians) and other Irish examples. It features deeply engraved bird or bat heads on the terminals and has 4 amber cabochons. The pin that was found with the brooch was fitted the wrong way round and could well have been added as a period repair. I have made mine with a pin that fits the style of the St Ninians examples, that take the feature from the central panel and repeat it on the pin.
Pin 11.5cm, ring 6.3cm
The original is gilded silver with amber and is in the Met museum.
Available in bronze, silver and silver with gilding.
